Target 20 AR Barrel

Hi all. I think I am going to start the build of a target AR. All I now is at this point it will be a 20 inch 1:7 or 8 twist with a fixed stock and a Vortex 4-12 Diamondback on top.

Those that run 20 inch barrels do you typically run 7 or 8 twist? Most barrels are the 8 twist. Also I am seriously thinking of getting the R rifling. Have you found this beneficial with heavier bullets? I am going to build this to run out to 600 and for Appleseed, but if I can get into consistent 2 MOA shooting with a sling I will look at branching out into other competitions. That is what this build is really in mind for. Thanks.

I like 8 twist (I guess Krieger is actually 1:7.7" but closer to 8 than 7) no trouble with 80gr bullets out to 600. I have not tried a R rifled barrel yet

My 20" build is a 1:8 mid weight WOA barrel.

I would get that, or the Larue Stealth.....it has a solid rep.

My plan is to develop a Hornady 75 gr load.

My Kreiger is a 7.7 works wonderfully. It really likes the Hornady 75gr bthp in front of 44 grains of varget. Haven't shot farther than 600yds with it but it stays supersonic to 1000yds.

I have a 1 in 8 twist WOA barrel and it loves 77 grain SMK.

I really don't think you will go wrong with either. It sounds like you are looking for serious accuracy. Pay up for the barrel. Get the best barrel you can possibly afford. This isn't the place to try to save money.

I have never used R rifling

I have fired my Krieger 7.7n1 twist to 794yds with Hornady steel match on a mansized torso steel silhouette.

I would suggest you buy the highest quality barrel you can afford.

After all, accuracy is what you seek... and a missed shot is money down the drain.

I would also true up the receiver face and Loctite in the barrel with what Criterion uses... Loctite 609

"Loctite ® 609™ is a low viscosity, rapid-curing anaerobic adhesive that augments the strength of press fit assemblies or slip fit assemblies up to 0.005"in diameter. Adds up to 3,000 psi holding power. Recommended for parts that will need subsequent dismantling, i.e., retention of bearings onto shafts and into housings."
