Switching Stocks on an M44

I purchased an M44 recently for a great price as I'm looking for a shooter. Bore is solid and despite some pitting on the bolt knob all the metal is in pretty good shape. The stock on the other hand not so much.

Its rough.

I toyed with the idea of just cleaning up the stock but thinking its too far gone and there are several cracks that upon closer inspection do not appear to be repairable long term. I doubt I have the skill to repair and refinish so:

The question is if I buy a replacement stock (looking for something original not a modern deal) how hard is it for a complete and total amateur to fit the action/barrel to the new stock?

I am no wood worker and short of some sanding and oiling/staining I have zero experience in this arena. Is this something I should even attempt?

It's entirely possible the thing will just fit. Mosins were mass produced with none of the parts hand fitted.
Gunparts is sold out of M44 stocks. Original stuff is getting scarce. None made since 1948.
