Prior to 1968, the minimum legal barrel length on a rifle was 18 inches. Those Swedish carbines were a little under, so Interarmco (now Interarms) had an extension welded to the muzzle to make them legal. Since the Swede carbine still was considered by the ATTU (predecessor of the BATF) to be a short barrel rifle, Interarmco gave them a new, and essentially meaningless, model designation.

In 1968, the minimum barrel length was reduced to 16 inches for rifles (it is still 18 inches for shotguns) and many of the added extensions were removed or never put on in the first place.
