Steel casings and non military rifles

A buddy of mine recently bought a mini 14. He bought some of the cheap wolf ammo with the steel case. He has shot around 200 rounds through it and it suddenly stopped cycling the shells. Long story short the extractor is broken. I have ordered parts to fix it, but I don't want it to happen to him again, nor do I want it to happen to my mini 14. Could the steel cases have been the cause or was it maybe just a worn out part. Rifle is a much older model. Thanks for anything yall can contribute

I can't say that the steel cases caused the problem, but that rifle was not designed for them, and steel can cause some problems, both in feeding and extraction, that won't occur with brass cases.

in another computer (sitting here unplugged on the floor)

I have a tech bulletin from Ruger specifically forbidding the use of Wolf steel-cased ammo in their guns.
