Springfield 840

Hello All,

I recently inherited a Springfield 840 bolt action chambered in .22 and cannot seem to find out much about it online other than it has also been manufactured as a Savage in the past. Most of the search results come up in centerfire calibers such as 30-30.

The 24" barrel is rusted on the outside and it took some elbow grease to find the manufacturer's stamp. The bore looks glassy clean however. It seems to cycle and dry fire fine though I will engage a gunsmith before I go live with ammo with it.

It appears to be pre-war (my guess) and someone has used a nail gun to tattoo the stock with what looks like to be someone's initials and (the year?) 48.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this model firearm they can share? I don't believe it is a high dollar heirloom but more of a shooter and I am interested in thoughts as to what extent if any that I should clean it up. I am also interested in finding a magazine for it.

Thank you.
