My brother pointed out last weekend that there are conversion kits for my Springfield 1911 a1's to 22 long rifle... for cheaper and easier plinking.. lean times are coming in a month or two and I was wondering where the place place to look for these are/is?

Ciener and Marvel make kits, however, the initial invest isn't cheap either. Normally $200+. Check Ebay, gunbroker and there are manf sites as well I just don't remember them offhand.

I'm already rethinking this idea

At $200 plus dollars I might just go with a 22 built on a 1911A1 frame... any ideas on this? I've got a Berretta 22 and a Star but neither are anything close to the big 1911.... the ruger 22/45 doesn't really look like a 1911. I would want something that closely matches a true 1911A1

I have had the Ciener Conversion unit for about 3 years, wish I'd gotten
a conversion unit 30 years ago, they are well worth it.

Several years ago I picked up a Ciener Platinum Cup conversion unit from Midway's closeout page at a bargin price. I liked it so much that I built up a 1911 frame to mount it on permanently. Its one of my favorite 1911s.:D
