Springfield 1911

have a chance at a used Springfield with a 4 digit CRG serial number. List for new is running damn near 4K; this is about 2500 with 6 mags slightly used. Good deal for a 1911?

Jeez. You can get into a Wilson Combat for those kinds of prices. I just bought a Wilson EDC X9 for less then that

Pardon my ignorance but what's a "CRG" serial number, and why might that possibly make a USED Springfield be worth more than any number of better guns new?

The CRG series is the ones made for the Feds with a 1-1.5" guarantee
and to Shrakbite, not looking for another -9mm

For a 1911 as a shooter imho, no way. Unless it has collector value to you there are lots of mid to high end amazing 1911s you can get new for that price

Definitely not a good deal. Many choices of hi end 1911s for that kind of money. I’m into S&W P&R revolvers and do a good bit of swapping. I get many irate guys trying to trade Hi end 1911s against S&Ws. The reason? They can’t get out from under what they paid and think they can trade them against something that much easier to turn into cash. I was born a night, but it wasn’t last night.

Well, if you want it, and the 'CRG' 1 to 1.5 inch accuracy is important to you, then get the thing and don't listen or even read the rest of the post. Who ever passed on saying 'Boy, I wish I would've saved more money!' (I know, someone, somewhere did say this but I'm just saying...)

That said, I got the 1911 I've always had an affinity toward, the Springfield Armory 1911 Range Officer for a smidge over $600 a few years ago.

If I had unlimited funds I'd go after a Les Baer for about the same, $2500 price as the one you're looking at but that's just one guy's opinion and your gun is undoubtedly every bit as good as the Les Baer offering. We all have our quirks and desires.

Remember, life is short.
Good luck

Cant go wrong with a Colt Cold Cup either. You can buy a series 80 and Series 70
for that same amount and you have two 1911s

holy crapola- a new Les Baer can be had for $2500 at 1911 Heaven-he has a web site, I don't know how to show it on this message. I have a springfield
tactical I got used for $450 a few years ago that shoots pretty good, great trigger.

Yep, thanks to all; I put that on hold and am going to look for a decent one in the 1-1500 range. I have seen Dan Wesson Valor, Sig Scorpion and a few others in that range.

Any other suggestions?
TIA!

The Sig Scorpion, while an OK gun, isn't worth being a consideration if you're looking at this price range. In the sub-$2000 range, the DW Valor, DW Specialist, and Springfield TRP are IMO the best options.

Good call on putting it on hold. I'm an admitted Springfield fanatic and I'm saying that price is a bit harsh to accept. I understand they might be $4k new. But if I'm in the $2500-$4000 price range, DubC-Hicks' assessment is solid. I would go with the TRP or DW line. Better yet, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, or Ed Brown.

Used

I have a Springfield 1911 “Loaded” model. A very nice pistol. I shoot it a lot. It was my backup Bullseye gun when I was shooting matches. It was $500 some years ago now.(Used)
About accuracy as a criteria. Guaranteed X-ring groups are nice. Very nice. How important that is is subject for discussion. If you are going to shoot Bullseye matches, then 1.6 inch groups are expected. If you are not going to be shooting at 50 yard targets….then not so much.

While I understand the appeal of buying the same gear the "pros" use, that is just stupid expensive for a 1911, IMO, and I'm glad you asked before laying down that kind of money. Dan Wesson (CZ) offers some outstanding 1911s if you want an out-of-the-box accurate pistol. And, as someone else pointed out, Les Baer 1911s are way too expensive but you can get a really nice one for that price. I see a lot of 1911s come through my shop, and I would look for a Dan Wesson if I were in your shoes (I'm not, I already have too many 1911s, including a Les Baer Thunder Ranch among others).

I own an older Springfield Loaded and it is a solid gun, but is not in the same league as what the OP is talking about. Baer makes excellent guns but you have to put 300 or 400 rounds through one to break it in.
