I wanted to see if someone could double check the powder ranges / grains for the 45 acp load?

45 ACP
200 Grain Wad Cutter
Red Dot powder

What is a good starting powder weight?????

My buddy is loading up some ammo and said he was going to use 5.0 grains and that seems a bit high to me and I don't have a book handy.

Thanks.

web site lists 4.0 gr as a target load. One ref I have lists 5.7 as a top load with a 200 gr JHP. No I don't think 5.0 is too hot. More than you eed for a target load for sure. Maybe 4.5 for plates or pins.
not that you need a hot load for pins with a .45ACP

200 gr. Jacketed, Red Dot Powder

Modern Reloading, 2nd Edition, .45ACP page 669 states:

5.0 grains Red Dot Starting load, 200 grs. Jacketed, Never exceed 5.2 grs.
Veolcity 858 fps. 19200 psi (pressure units)

My personal load which is probably not superior is using 230 gr. jacketed round nose, 5.0 gr. Bullseye, but you didn't ask that so excuse me.

Red Dot?

Very unusual, I know some of the Alliant manuals have Red Dot listed for the .45 ACP. but, I am checking a 10 year old NRA Handloading Manual and they have 30 recommended loads and not one powder is Red Dot. Mainly, if you want to use Alliants products they are Bullseye (which I use} and Unique. Maybe you should be looking for a more effective powder. Check your pressure cup.
