Smith Model 36-1

I just got back from my mother in law a Smith Model 36-1 that I loaned her several years ago. This Smith is Blued with wood handles 3" barreled 38 cal., 5 shot. It has some rust along barrel, but in otherwise good shape. Some one offered to buy this Smith from me. What is possible value? I can not post pictures right now (not at home). Will post when I can. Also on a side note, would anyone kow how old this revolver is? I can get serial number if needed. Thanks ahead of time.

Call S&W at 1-800-331-0852 and give them your serial no. They will tell you the year and sometimes even the month the gun was made. Asfar as worth goes, it'll depend on the condition of the gun, but I've seen them on the S&W forums for anywhere from $350-$550.

3" J frames tend to bring a slight premium. Hard to say without pics, but in the condition described I wouldn't go above $300-325.

Here's my track on the no dash 2-inch:

Smith & Wesson 36 Revolver in .38 Spl. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $400 in 98% condition and $525 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 23 recorded prices using local and internet sources for this gun from $284 to $595 over a period of 103 days ending October 20, 2008. The average price as of that date was $369. Current or last MSRP is $735.

I've been seeing them for $425-$475 lately. I'd think the 3-inch might be more.

I have been able to get some pictures. The serial Number is J530474. You should be able to see the little bit of rust on barrel.

I did some checking at Cabela's, Williams gunsight and some of the forums after posting here last night, and I'd say based on the condition of the gun in the pictures, and the ones I looked at on line, you could probably expect to get between 260.00 and 325.00
