Sig P228 Questions

I understand this pistol is discontinued ,does anyone know why? Is this model "drop safe"? Does it have a firing pin safety? The reason I ask ,we saw a memo some time ago of a CA LEO who dropped his P220 ,which discharged when it landed on it's hammer ,killing him. Last question ,is $595 LNIB with three 13 round mags reasonable? Thanks ,Regards 18DAI.

They switched to the 229 because it since it is also available in .40 and .357, it would be cheaper to maintain just one production line instead of two. 228s are still produced on an as-needed basis for the U.S. military, though.

I own several, Sig discontinued the 228 here in the US cause the 229 would fill the gap. The firing pin has 2 safety feature I believe as long as you use the decocker to put the hammer down. The price on yours seems ballpark. The 228 is my favorite Sig.

The Sig P228 is still produced, just not imported into the US anymore for civilians. I bought a LNIB P228 with two 13 round mags and one ten round mag for roughly $465. It is on my hip as I type this. My preference is the 228 over the 229, becasue to me, it has better balance.

If we are talking about the same incident, the California officer did not lower the 220 hammer with the decock lever but lowered it with the thumb instead, defeating the safety system. Drop the hammer with the decock lever only for that reason.

CDNN sometimes has good deals on used P228's. I got one for $369 (plus $30 hand picked fee) from them. It is in excellent condition and shoots great.

If you do get the 228, you will be very pleased with it. One thing to keep in mind, if it comes with the regular sights where you have to dot the "i", the dot has to be placed where you want the bullet to hit. I didn't realize this until I read it over at SigForums.

The only 9m/m handgun I currently own is a 1990 model
West German SIG-SAUER P228 that came with two standard
capacity magazines in the old silver-red-& white cardboard box
with all documentation. I've owned many 9m/m's over the years
but the P228 is by far my favorite~!

There are many solid performers in the 9m/m line-up. Some of
the better ones that I have own include: Smith & Wesson's
model 39-2 and 6906 , Browning's Hi-Power Practical, SIG's P226,
and a Glock 17.
