Sig 229, wow

I have a sig pro in 357 sig, i have been wanting to get a glock 20 or 29, so i am looking at the glocks and they feel ok then i asked to see a 229 after all i read about them and wow, they feel so much better the a glock, fits my hand perfect and love the look if them. Now i might have to start saving my pennies.

The 229 is a fine gun, I like mine in 9mm a whole lot. Never had a malfunction so far, after about 3000 rounds.

You should be able to find a decent used one.

I love my 229; I'm not sure I'd love it in 357 SIG though. That said, you'd have the option to convert it over to 9mm very easily. You're not going to go wrong with the 229.

Is it just a barrel and mag swap to go from 357 to 9mm?

Only thing you'll need is a conversion barrel and that's it. The 9mm rounds will fit in the 357/40 magazine. With that said it's fine for the range but I wouldn't carry it.

Most of the time when i carry is in the woods so size isnt that big of a deal for me,

Sig1- Depending on what animals you're trying to avoid in the woods the 9mm might not be enough. If you're carrying it in the woods for protection I would consider it the same as carrying it on the street and I wouldn't trust the magazine with the conversion barrel adequate. I would have a dedicated .40, .45, or a 10mm.

Sparks1957- yep it's all you need. If you are going from .357 to 9mm and using the smaller 9mm magazines the magazine will be a little bit loose in the frame and be more prone for bad feeds. The recoil spring will be just fine.

Like I said in my other thread all you have to change to go from .40/.357 to 9mm is a conversion barrel and it would be just fine for the range. If I was carrying concealed (which I do with my P229 .40) though I wouldn't trust the conversion barrel and the wrong magazine- I would carry a dedicated gun be it .40, .357, or 9mm but that's just me.

If i got the 9mm barrel it would only be for cheap plinking, i would probably use 357 with double tap loads for the woods.

If you want to convert a 357/40 p229 to 9mm and get it to work 100% you will need a the 22LR to 9mm caliber X-change kit (which comes with a slide, barrel, spring, and mag) and a frame made in Exeter, NH--not Germany.

Sig then claims that this STILL may not work.

They may be lying to get me to buy another gun instead of a 200 dollar kit.

Dude, that's what I thought. I knew the .40 could be converted easily to .357 Sig, but didn't think it was easy to go .40 to 9mm.

I remember reading about this on the Sig forum

I have a 239 combo .357 Sig/ 9mm. Different bbl, spring, and mags to go to 9mm. Pistol has to be built for the larger case size. Otherwise buy another pistol. If you have the .357 or .40, it's a go for the conversion. The other way, not so much.

The P239 is a slightly different situation than the P229. I have heard a factory SIG 9mm barrel can be used to convert a .357 P239 to 9mm. As midlifecrisis stated, to convert a .357 SIG P229 to 9mm, you will need an after-market 9mm conversion barrel made by someone like Bar-Sto or EFK Firedragon. A SIG factory 9mm barrel will not work in a P229.

The .357 recoil spring and mags can be used with some caveats. If you shoot light 9mm loads you may have to replace the recoil spring with a lighter 9mm recoil spring to maintain reliability. .357/.40 mags (my P229 is .40 S&W) have worked reliably for me, but I have heard you might have occasional feeding problems when the mags are fully loaded because of the slightly wider mag lips. Again reliability could be restored by using 9mm mags.
