Sig 229 in .357?

Anyone have this gun? I was considering getting this in the Sig 239 but I think the 229 in this caliber would be better for recoil. I have a 228 and I love the feel and look of the gun, so I'm thinking of trying it's twin in a different caliber, not quite a .40 but fun to shoot. Appreciate any comments. Thank you.

The P229 and P239 feel pretty different in the hand. Pick both up and see what works better for you.

I had a P239 in 357sig and I've had 229's in 9mm and 40. I prefer the 229 for sure.

Might be worth getting the 40 version so all you need is a barrel swap for 357sig.

Definitely get the P229 in 357 SIG over the P239. It's a great gun and it shoots very, very well. You will get tiny groups with it. You can get a barrel in 40 S&W for it. This too shoots well.

P226 in 357 SIG is very sweet.

Is the 229 supposed to feel like the 226?? One of the new ones makes that claim.

I know the 226 is a popular gun but I think the 229 is a better fit.....for me. The 226 is a full size and I'm not that big, so if I decide to carry, the 229 won't be as much of a challenge.

They take the same slide. The case head is nearly identical.

It gives you another cartridge option with the same magazine (as I recall). 40 S&W requires one less step in case prep. Do not let people scare you off reloading 357 SIG.

Recoil is a bit stout in either caliber, but the heavy P229 manages it much better than the Glock 32 or 23. It is a taller gun that requires a bit more forward cant and looser shirt to conceal. Overall, it's a very good gun. Get one with the SRT trigger.

Have a P229 that was shipped at a .40; bought a factory .357 barrel which dropped right in.

I'd definitely want the option to shoot .40, whether you buy a barrel or buy the gun in the caliber. .357 is hard to come by and pretty expensive.

A .40/.357 P229 can be converted to the other with a factory barrel. They usually drop in without any fitting. If you want to shoot 9mm you will need an aftermarket barrel from Bar-sto. You cannot convert a 9mm pistol to .40/.357. The breech face is too small.

FWIW; to me the .357sig isn't really as good as it once was.
Many major US law enforcement agencies are switching from the .357sig duty round to the .40S&W or the 9x19mm(9mm Luger).
The Texas DPS went from a SIG P226 .357sig pistol to the M&P in 9x19mm.
The NM state troopers converted too in 2013, from a .357sig to the M&P 9mm.
There's nothing wrong with the P229R in .357sig per se, it's just not doing anything new .40 or 9x19mm bullets can't do. Many complain about the lack of rounds & the higher prices too.
I supported the .357sig for years & considered buying a HK P2000 LEM format in .357sig but now, Id get a 9x19mm or a .40S&W.
Truth be told, my favorite defense/carry handgun round would be the larger .40Super but it never quite caught on with US gunners.
The .357sig might hang on a few more years but I think a slow decline is starting up all over the USA.

One thing to note if you buy a p229 and change the barrel is the sights will be slightly off. Whichever caliber the gun wasn't designed for will either shoot slightly high or slightly low depending on if its 357 converting to 40 or 40 converting to 357.

I have one it they take the recoil very well. Much better then my glock 23. I find it so expensive to shoot that I rarely use. Even though it is my favorite handgun round. It's very fast and flat. Shoots like a dream.

I have a P229 Sport in .357 Sig, not quite the same buts it great shooting handgun, great trigger too
