My son wants a shoulder holster for his XD 40, mostly so he can carry when bowhunting. He doesn't want a belt holster because his pack waist belt gets in the way. Any recommendations?

For a good field/hunting rig, I'd look at a Bianchi M92II holster.
It's based on the M12 Bianchi milspec holster in use since the 80s.
It comes in OD camo or black. You can convert the rig to tanker, leg/SAS, shoulder etc.
You can add magazine holders too.

My mistake. He's looking for a chest holster where he can wear the gun on the outside

The Bianchi UM series(M12/UM92I/UM92II) can be quickly converted from a belt rig to a shoulder to a tanker(chest) with add-ons. The holster includes a barrel rod.
If the military holster isn't ideal, see the holsters from Simply Rugged or maybe Lawman Leathergoods.
I'd suggest you or your son contact the holster firm first to insure they can make/provide the style you want & when it can be sent. Many custom or special designs take a few months to deliver due to demand or limited resources.
