I have a friend who has a brother that graciously loaned me his Bushmaster AR15. I have been thinking about getting one or building one, but didn't know if I really wanted one or not. I bought two boxes of shells for it. His AR has a short bull barrel in .223.
I can see why folks get so cranky about them! I tore out a sheet of notebook paper and colored in a 1" dot, then stapled it up at about 25 yards. Wow, I managed to put 6 shots in the circle, with open sights! Later that afternoon, I set up a target at 100 yards and put 5 shots into a 6 inch group, still with open sights. Not too bad!
I was a little "iffy" about the little .223 cartridge, but it's a really fun round to shoot, and more powerful than I thought. I set up a gallon milk jug, full of water at about 60 yards or so. Made ribbons out of it with one shot!
I'll probably still consider a larger caliber, but the little .223 would be nice to have around. I might just order a stripped reciever today! I've got to admit that I've waited WAY to long to get one!
