Shipping to a gunsmith

I am going to send my AK out to have some work done on it. It is going to a manufacturer/gunsmith who is not the original manufacturer. Do I need to do any paper work (FFL), or can I just bring it down to UPS or FedEx and have them send it out? Do I need to even tell them it is a rifle? Thanks for the help.

You can legally send it to a licensed gunsmith (he actually has the same FFL as a dealer) and he can ship it back to you. The law says you are supposed to tell the shipper if you send a firearm. You can also send it through US Mail if you want to.

Assuming that the gunsmith has an FFL, you do not have to tell the shipper that the package contains a firearm. I would tell them though, since you will have problems with any insurance claims if you don't. You can use the USPS to mail the rifle.
