Okay legal beagles, is this real or imagined.... I got an email from my dad who got word elsewhere on it...

Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on
our 2009 1040 federal
tax form all guns that you have or own. It may
require fingerprints
and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on Feb.. 24. This bill will
become public
knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is
an amendment to
the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the
Finance
Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on
it at all.

First, a search of current legislation at http://thomas.loc.gov/ finds no Senate bill 2099.

Second, the statements in the forwarded email are absolutely wrong in several respects.

This bill was introduced on Feb.. 24. This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law.

All bills are published in the Federal Register when they are introduced.

This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the Finance Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on it at all.

All bills, whether new legislation or amendments to existing legislation, must be approved by both the House and the Senate.

Bogus crap.

I'd love to know who started the rumor so I could repeatedly slap that person.

This, right here, is a good indication of its progeny:

Several years ago there was a rumored gun ban that would be "enacted" through the exact same mechanism. Anyone who understands, even the least little bit, the American governmental process knows that this is a crock of crap.

It looks like someone took the old pants-wetting, hysteria inducting message and "updated" it with a new pants-wetting, hysteria-inducing "threat."

It's false, it always has been false, and given the supposed passage mechanism, it always will be false. I don't see any reason for this thread to remain open.
