Scope rails?

At the gunshop yesterday, new employee mounting new scope on a new rifle. He mounted a new scope rail first, then the rings, and then he put electric tape inside the rings. He then set the new Redfield scope in the rings & finished the mount. I asked about checking the rings for alighnment and the tape. He told me he always used tape in the rings so they would grip the scope better. With the use of scope rails, you don't have to check the rings or lap them anymore. I still do all of it the old fashioned way with rods and lapping tools. Are the new rails that good ? Am I showing my age? Is the young new gunstore employee right or full of it ?
