I want to put a scope on a Henry 45-70. I can afford up to 250-300. I want to see clearly the target at 200 yds. Any suggestions.

I use a plain jane Leupold 3 x 9 that I found within your price requirements on my BBB 45-70 with 22" octagonal barrel, my favorite levergun. Works fine for me.

1.5-4 VX Freedom
2-7X33 VX Freedom
3-9X40 VX Freedom
2.5X20 FX-II
3-9X40 Burris Fullfield II
1-4X24 Bushnell Elite 4500

I have experience with all three brands and have no issues recommending these optics. If you want to shoot small groups at 200 yards these aren't the best for that. If you want to kill deer at 200 they'll all work.

I just used Optics Planet to let you look at your options. I'm in not suggesting you purchase from them. There might be better deals out there on some used or new optics.

How big are the targets? I can see a 2ft sq steel plate at 300yds with iron sights, but not as well as i used to be able too. Gotta figure out how much magnification you need.

Off the top of my head, the leupold vx freedom line is good. I have and really like the 2-7x33

At those distances, with that round, i would highly reccomended something with moa type reticle so you can find and use your hold overs easily.

Shooting bench rest match groups with 45-70 is a relative thing so I don't bother with higher quality glass or magnification. I find that shooting MOA or under is quite hard considering the size of the bullet and the recoil. IMO the 3 x 9 loopy is more than enough for practical hunting range--which I consider 200 yds or so--and is lightweight and can take the pounding.
