Savage 10P-SR Range Review

I posted something in the reloading section as well, but wanted to post here as well as the last post with this rifle I was thouroughly bummed about the scope I previously had on the rifle and the sub par accuracy I was getting with my hand loads.

Got the new Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 and made some more ammo and headed back to the range this past weekend. The scope was superb as I expected it to be from previous experience!

Contrary to my screen name, I am not and never claim to be an excellent marksman. My Dad was always into handguns growing up, I learned to shoot from him, but pretty much self taught when it comes to scoped rifles. I'm always trying to improve based on techniques and such that I read here and there. I pulled a few shots and knew it when the trigger broke, but it's all part of learning I suppose.

All groups were fired at 100yds using front bi-pod and rear bag with a 5-8mph cross wind. My loads are using New Lapua brass and CCI LR primers. The grid on targets are made up of 1/2 inch squares.
I'm quite pleased with the performance thus far.

Factory Wolf Gold .308 ammo.

I got better accuracy with H4895 and N140 than with Varget or Reloader 15 with my old Savage 10 FP.
You might want to try those two powders if you can find any.

To let you get some idea of the variation between the powders and
With my old 10 FP Savage using Sierra 168 SMKs:
Best load with Varget averaged 0.607 @ 2675 fps at 2.800 OAL with Sierra
Best load with Reloader 15 averaged 0.571 @ 2662 fps at 2..800 OAL.
Best load with H4895 averaged 0.519 @ 2600 fps at 2.810 OAL.
Best load with N140 averaged 0.315 @ 2675 fps at 2.815 OAL.

With 150 grain SMKs:
Best load with H4895 averaged 0.470 @ 2675 fps at 2.780 OAL.
Best load with N140 averaged 0.471 @ 2640 fps at 2.775 OAL.

With 175 grain SMKs:
Best load with H4895 averaged 0.550 @ 2675 fps at 2.800 OAL.
I never tried N140 with the 175s in the old rifle. It seemed to shoot 150 and 168s better than the heavier 175s.

I just bought a new Savage 10 FCP-K and using Sierra 168 SMKs the best load with N140 averaged 0.502 @ 2570 fps at 2.800.
Using N140 powder and Sierra 150 SMKs the best load averaged 0.442 @ 2585 fps at 2.790 OAL.
Using H4895 powder and Sierra 175 SMKs the best load averaged 0.367 @ 2550 fps at 2.790 OAL.

The new rifle has a much shorter chamber and I am still experimenting with it. It really hasn't been shot much so I don't have a lot of data on it. So far it seems to like the heavier bullets better than the lighter ones.
