Saiga Scout?

I have been itching to make up a " scout " type rifle. When I was at a gunshow recently and saw those 16" Saiga 7.62X39 carbines and thought that they would be an interesting rifle in the psudo scout role. Anyone know of a mount that replaces the gas tube on the saiga? I checked with Ultimak but they said they didn't make one. Any ideas? A gunsmith that could make one? I also noticed in a current firearms magazine(?) a 16" 7.62X51 saiga carbine which would give you the "proper" cartridge and correct length (37.5") but what kind of blast would a 16" .308 create?

I didn't like that mount on my SAI converted Saiga. It is a heavy mount and sticking off the side it throws off the balance of the rifle.

You might want to check out the Scout-type forward scope mount made by Millett for AK-47's and SKS's. It replaces the rear sight. Because the Saiga is basically a "civilianized" AK-47 action, it may well fit your sight mount (or do so with only minor modification). I'm putting one on an SKS at the moment, and am very favorably impressed (so far!). The sight can be found on the Web at http://www.millettsights.com/milit.htm. You can't order online, but they have a dealer locator on their site, and you can get one of their local dealers to order it for you. If there isn't one, give them a call - they're pretty helpful folks.

Hope this helps.
