The best answer is to buy one of each and see what you like best.
I've owned all three sizes, and still have an older, standard NM gun.
If I were to buy another M1A, it would be a standard grade, standard rifle.
The "smaller" guns are in reality, only "shorter", and weigh basically the same as a standard gun. This shortness brings with it a couple of issues that arent an issue with the standard guns.
The SOCOM as it comes, is basically a 100 yard rifle, due to its sights. The Scout will be better in that respect, but you can also put the Scouts irons on the SOCOM, but you loose the fast, close range sights. Both can be scoped, which limits their usefulness, or red dotted, which is really the best way to go.
Springfields rails are not "mil spec", or at least, mine wasnt, maybe they have changed. If they are still the same as mine, your better off with Weaver rings, as the mil spec mounts may or may not work. They are also made of steel and get very hot, very fast, and stay that way.
