As far as I can tell these are pretty much the same gun. Is there a significant difference that I'm not seeing that would make me want to spend $50 more on one than the other in the same condition?

In 1957, S&W went to a Model # nomenclature. Assuming the K-22s the more expensive of the 2, it may be a pre-1955 (or was it '52?) 5-screw version, which some are willing to pay more for.

They are the same. Up untill 1957 the K frame 22 Masterpiece was known as the K22. In 1957 S&W gave their guns model numbers and it became the Model 17. The dash numbers following the 17 (17-1, 17-2, etc) are engineering changes made to the guns thru the years.
Many folks will pay a premium for the earlier guns because they believe they are better made.

Buy the one that appears to be in better condition (finish, lock up, etc). If condition is equal then I would go for the earlier gun.
