Can I load all 6 chambers when I carry this gun or should I only load 5 rounds with the hammer down on an empty chamber? Thanks for your help.

I think you mean all 6 chambers. Yes, that revolver is designed for safe carry with all 6 chambers loaded.

All post-WWII S&W revolvers are perfectly safe to carry with all chambers loaded. There are actually two safety features built in to these revolvers. First, the rebound slide cams the hammer backwards when the trigger is released so that the firing pin does not contact the primer. Secondly, post-WWII S&W revolvers also have a sliding hammer block that prevents the hammer from moving fully foreward until the trigger is pulled. Because your 28-2 is a post-WWII gun (all S&W hand ejectors with model numbers are), it is perfectly safe to carry fully loaded.

Most of the S&W revolvers - made post WWII - have the slide action hammer blocks installed -- so they're safe to carry with 6 rounds in the gun.

So all the model 28's should be fine / regardless of the dash number..
