I'm thinking about buying a S&W 1911. How are the stock trigger and any problem with the external extractor?

Haven't had any problems with those. I like mine. Got to keep the mags clean or it gets cranky.
In my opinion the S&Ws are the cream of the current crop of 1911s in their price range. The triggers vary from pistol to pistol so try to handle the one you want to buy. I've handled some with ~3-1/2lb triggers and some that were maybe 4-1/2lbs, all were excellent.

Mine has been excellent so far, with zero malfunctions.
I wouldn't worry about the external extractor. S&W are the masters at it. Although it does ruin the lines of the pistol a bit.

love mine. i had an initial problem that the mag release, came apart on me, but i got a new part for $2 from brownells and it's been working great since. like all 1911s, it's less than perfect with cheap mags - had an occasional problem with JHPs using $8 mags. however, with nice wilson magazines like the ones it comes with, never had a problem. trigger is great and it's probably the most accurate centerfire handgun i own right now.
