Ruger SP 101 "Price check"

Looking to a used Ruger SP 101 3" in VG+ to excellent condition, no box. Barrel is marked .357 mag caliber , 125gr. bullet. I'm assuming it is unreliable with the longer 158's. I'm wondering if $350 shipped is a fair price. Thanks

Last time I checked, here in Phoenix new SPs were going for $399, good used ones maybe $325. It will last forever anyway.

That SP101 will only handle 125 grain bullets...the cylinder is too short to handle anything larger.

Not true.

My 3" sp101 .357 shoots dead-on at 25ft with 158gr LSWC loads. They fit beautifully in the cylinder... almost like they were made to go there.

Retail or hand-loaded, it can handle 158's.

Azredhawk: No, it's true. IF the barrel is marked 125 grain only: Some of the early 357 sp101's were built with a cylinder designed around 38 special. Only about the first 6 months of production. After that ruger went to a longer cylinder to handle all SAMMI length 357 rounds.

As for the 158 grainers matching POI/POA, yep. Those 158s work well with both of mine.

Here in Cali the cheapest I could find was 429. And while I was looking at Gemini Customs I saw that I can get a brand new one for 410. Since I was going to have some work done on it anyway, not only did I save 19 bucks, but I also saved having to ship the gun to them...and I saved on the tax to...so I just got mine from Gemini and had them do what I wanted done....great buying experience.

Ruger lists

the .38 +P special with a 3-1/16th" barrel retails at $530 per Ruger's website.

I paid my ex-wife $400 for her's (less then 30 rounds though it) and for a Remington Model 34 .22 bolt action, tubular magazined rifle. The 34 was made from 1932 until 1935!

Very well, I sit corrected and thank you for the information. Learn something new every day!

Don't use the 158 grain... unless you just like recoil and muzzle flash...

The .357 125 grain is better from the shorter barrels and longer barrels too...

The best choice for that barrel length is the Gold Dot 135 grain 38 Special.

This cartridge was specifically designed for it's effeciency in "snubby" barrels...

The .357 125 grain will do in a pinch but the .357 from a snubby is no fun... and at night you'd better make the first round count, because you will be nearly blind for subsequent shots...
