Ruger Mini-14 Ranch rifle - minimum value?

A buddy of mine bought a Ranch rifle 6-8 weeks ago. Before shooting it, he decided he didn't want to keep it. It is NIB and I agreed to go with him to a couple of dealers to see what they'll pay cash or what he'd probably get on a consignment sale (with 20% commission).

Any thoughts on the lowest amount he should expect to get before I jump in and buy a rifle I have absolutely no need for (and no companion gun in .223)? I'm OK with, "Don't buy it at any price" if that's the answer, because I get all trembly in the knees when I see a good brand for sale, unused, at what might be an incredibly low price.

He told me he'd take $400 for it from me, because I'm his buddy. So the dilemma is that I don't need it and would feel guilty paying hardly more than half what he paid 6 weeks ago (I was with him), but I see him not netting more than $400 from the dealers.

Agree, the category is now "used," but I'd also call it 100%. Oh, well, at least it will put food on somebody's table.

Water-man - thanks - I think he knows he could squeeze a bit more out of it (I'd agree with the $500 estimate), but he wants to just get it done and with proper bill of sale and I.D.

We're going to two dealers on Wed. One of them sells the gun he wants to order and I've encouraged him to ask about getting a trade-in value. If it works like with cars, he'd save the extra sales tax on the trade-in value.

If it were a stainless .308, it would be in my safe or car trunk and I'd be busy trying to figure out how to explain it, instead of writing this...

Bama - I've advised him along that line before, when he sold a different one, but he makes up his own mind. I think his highest priority is in keeping the gun in a legal chain of title, so to speak, until he is no longer responsible for it.

If I were single, I'd buy it for one of my kids or grandkids.

I paid $589+ transfer and tax for mine last year, brand new. I'd say sell it for $500-$550 in a trade he'll probably get $400-$450. Maybe ask $600 and take $550 for it. In a private sale I wouldn't sell it for any less than $500 (although it should go pretty quick at that price).

You can get a new one at Walmart for about $647( Blued and wooden stock).The stainless is about $60 MORE. $400 is not out of line and more thana dealer would pay.If He's your buddy give him $450. I'd value the Friend over the firearm.

Daggitt - that's exactly the dilemma - I wouldn't feel right paying less than $450 to a buddy, but it is not worth that to me because it's not a gun I'm after. I hope he'll get at least $450 as a trade, since he's going to have to pay MSRP for what he's ordering. We go out on Wed. - should be interesting.

The four of us were at supper and my wife started in on me about too many guns. I asked the ladies what they thought the minimum value of the guns we owned would be, each, as a percentage of today's NIB prices and assuming nice & clean. They conceded that it would be at least 50% and maybe a shade more. Then I asked her what that fancy $4K set of pearls I bought her a long time ago is worth today. Then they changed the subject.
