Removing the Elavation site from 1903 Springfield

I'm trying to put a square b scope mount on a 1903 Springfield, but the elevation site assembly is in the way. Is there a way to remove this without sending it to a gunsmith?

I tried

And ended up giving it to my gunsmith, who charged me $15 to remove the old sight and replace it with a new one.
