Remington 870 problem? Help

I have a Remington 870 express shotgun and I am unsure if it has developed a problem. When the shotgun is not not loaded or has an empty shell in the chamber and is not cocked the bolt and pump with sink back a quarter of an inch or so. It stops when it hits the hammer. It dose not do this when loaded or cocked even when empty. I think this is just normal wear but am unsure.

There's nothing holding the slide in the forward position unless the gun is cocked. What you're seeing is normal operation.
