Rem 1100 Forearm cracked

A Rem 1100 wasn't ejecting. It was determined that the rubber gas seal had disintegrated from age and use. Anyhow, examination of the forearm showed the top (part that is near the barrel) is cracked. This was gouged out, a piece of fibreglass cloth and Acraglas applied to it and it will be allowed to cure 24 hours.

Anyway, could that crack have been caused by the escaping gases?

Wood or synthetic?
Crack or gouge?
Although either one would maybe show erosion and burning from gas, rather than a crack.
A gouge, maybe so.

Not likely ???

I seriously doubt it or perhaps it's just that I have never seen it or heard of it happening on an 1100. I have owned many 1100's and currently down to two. ... ;)

Now then, the 11-87, is a different story and know two that might have seen this problem. Still can't say what caused it though. Most now carry the fiber glass mat liners. .....

Do I remember that the original 1100 REM did NOT have the fiberglass .That was added when it was found that split forends often were the case ! ?

You are correct.

Your memory serves you right and personally have never seen this liner on any 1100 but you have to keep in mind that most of mine are older ones. One thing about the 11-87, is that is has a pin and the cracks I've seen were at the pins. ....

That crack is fairly common on 1100s. The wood is very thin there, and the op rod is right there, and the vibrations are probably pretty good. Just glass it and leave it alone, it will be fine.

Forearm was acraglassed on Thursday and today I began carving, cutting, scraping and filing away the excess. Too much and it's hard to reassemble and could possibly interfere with the recoiling of the barrel.

Still waiting from the gaskets from Brownell's so I can test fire it.

The barrel on the 1100 doesn't recoil. The 1100 made in 3 inch mag all had the fiberglass reinforce.. I believe it was in deference to the thinness if the wood not gas pressure.
