Recoil

Even if you calculate the free recoil energy gun 'fit' has a huge effect in how the recoil is perceived by the shooter.

A well designed and fitted long gun makes even recoil that might appear punishing be easily tolerated (or at least tolerated).

A bad design or fit will just beat you up.

Handguns have less 'fitting' than long guns, but for the most part have lower overall recoil than long guns.

A handgun grip to large for the shooters hand will make the perceived recoil worse.
A very small grip on a .357 can be a real handful.

I know on the net you can do a search, and get all the info you need Just myself I think to much is put into it, and thats why folks worry so much about it. I think you should give it some thought with something very big caliber wise, or a young shooter, or a woman, and someones first time.
