Range report: Uberti 1858 Remington

Finally took the new 1858 for a test spin this past Saturday. I shot 30 rounds. I was fairly pleased with this firearm. It was a "blast" to shoot. Lots o-fun-n-smoke!

The first 24 rounds I used 25 grains of 777 whereas the last 6 rounds it was 30 grains. I always use a lubricated Wonder Wad between the charge and the ball. As expected, this firearm fired about 6" too low due to the tall front site that Uberti ships with. It is made to file down and its clear I'll need to do that. This firearm shot about 4" to the left of center. I noticed that the front sight is actually about 1/32" off center to the right. Because Uberti dove tails the front sight it is easily corrected with a drift. Hopefully, making the front sight dead on center will make it POA with regard to windage.

I used Hornady .454 round swagged lead balls. I was surprised to see that a lead ring typically did NOT shave off when loading the ball. Maybe I need to think about using .457 balls instead. I have an ample supply of them that I use for my ROAs.

For caps I tried several. The Winchester Magnum #11 caps (aka CCI #11) fell right off the nipples. The Remington #11 caps seemed to work okay but not perfect. It is #11 caps that are recommended by Uberti. The Remington #10 caps worked the best and most reliably although I did experience a few non-fires on first impact. All in all I did not have a clean run with any of the three caps styles. Guess it might be time to look into those Tresco nipples that everyone talks about.

Once I figured out where to aim this Remmie it was very easy to get consistent hits. All-in-all I was very please with my first outing.

Thanks for the range report Clem; well written!

Can't wait to get mine out again... probably end of June on our annual Mancamp trip to the river. Maybe I'll get to shoot the '63 Pocket I've had since October or November too. Hard to believe it's been that long. Guess when it comes down to it, I'm just a poser.

I shoot my uberti 1858 remmie about once every two weeks and it is far more accurate than my 9mm sig or my gi 1911 45.I load 35 grains of fffgblack powder followed by filling up rest of cylinder with corn meal ,then load .454 or .457 ball then seal cylinder with crisco.I usually fire between 80 and a 100 shots in one session and my accuracy is consistant all the way through.I like remington #10 caps.I enjoy shooting this gun more than my modern day firearms.

I think this is the correct nipple to buy for a new Uberti 1858 Remmie. Any thoughts from someone who switched out the factory nipples to Ampco bronze (?Tresco?) nipples?

No, no, no, no, no - that's a small nipple for the Pocket Remington. You need the PIR-A (TotW part number for 6mmx0.75 thread Treso) for the full size Remmy. The Treso part number is 11-50-10 if you buy from the Possible shop or some other Treso purveyor.

The reason for my confusion stems from the nipple data listed in the Dixie Gun Works catalog. It shows all the Pietta revolvers as using the 6mm x 0.75 nipples whereas the Uberti revolvers use the 5.5mm x 0.9 nipples (Uberti Walker and Dragoons using 6mm x 0.9 nipples).

Typo or what?

For Uberti 1851 & 1861 Navy, 1860 Army, 1862 Police, 1849 Pocket, Baby Dragoon and Remington .36 & .44.

For Uberti Dragoon and Walker.

>>>sweet gun. the pic didn't capture the exact blue color though, right?<<<

Actually it pretty much did. He's got one of the "charcoal blue" guns. Here's mine:

I've grown a bit tired of the look and I'll probably do something else with mine but it is interesting.

That's for Pietta. Ubertis use 12-28 nipples, Treso 11-50-16.

Uberti revolvers use the 5.5mm x 0.9 nipples (Uberti Walker and Dragoons using 6mm x 0.9 nipples).

Dunno if it's a typo, but it's definitely not correct. Uberti Walkers and Dragoons use 1/4-28 nipples, Navy/Army/New Army guns use 12-28. I *think* the pocket guns use the 5.5mmx0.9...I don't know what it is, but I know that it is NOT the same as the Navy/Army/New Army.

Yep. Admiral B is correct. My bad.

The correct Track of the Wolf part number is PCC-A.

Thunder Ridge cross reference chart is full of errors, by the way.

Thanks Gladio, there's a larger version posted here:

When you find the picture you want make sure that you select "original" for size just below the picture and then you can right click on it to save it. And thanks for asking rather than just taking! :)

By the way, I've been meaning to tell you from the time you popped up on the forum that your English is simply superb. Well done brother.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to the range to try out my first ever batch of reloads! I worked up .45 Colts, cases filled with American Pioneer, 230 gr. cast round nose. If you never hear from me again you'll know what to think. :D

Cheers,
Oly

Someone started calling them "Tresco" a few years back, and the name has somehow stuck. "Treso" is the correct spelling.
