Questions about the S&W 18-4

What are the differences between the S&W 17 and 18?

I think the serial number was 224NXX or 228NXX, when was it made? It was definitely a 18-4 though.

It has a 4" barrel. Would there be an mechanical issues with less accuracy than one with a 6" barrel? Or am I merely looking at lost velocity?

Anything else I need to look out for? The lock-up is very tight and the bluing is nice.

The M18 is nothing more than a M17 with a 4" tapered barrel and a ramped front sight. It's the Combat version of the Target revolver. Check the serial number as that "N"" is probably a "K".
