Questions about Sig 226 Blackwater Tac. sights

Was shooting the 226 blackwater tactical the other day, noticed the front night sight on the gun has a large gap (its deliberate, not a defect) separating the sight from contacting most of the top of the gun.
Any reason?
Looks awfully prone to snagging and potentially breaking or bending, was curious if anyone had any insight.

Also... the sight picture using the factory night sights places the front sight dot on top of the rear sight's 2 dots (sight picture is a pyramid of dots). Most of my target sights on other guns place the front sight even with the rear (a straight line of dots).

Is this a standard sight picture for military handguns?
What are the advantage over more traditional iron sight pictures?

I appreciate any info, TYVM
