I read today on the internet that you can smooth an action on a bolt action rifle by applying lapping compound ( like used on valves in cylinder heads ) and working the action quit a few times. Has anyone tried this?
Yes lapping the lugs does help. Here is a good link briefly explaining how it must be done. Note that this is a link to building/blue printing a BA rifle so the lapping procedure is not completely covered.
Just keep in mind that lapping the lugs on your rifle WILL change the headspacing; maybe not to the extent of being excessive, but yours may be on the verge of being so and lapping the lugs may put it into an unsafe condition. Also, remember that Mauser actions are case-hardened and excessive lapping may break through that case-hardening.
SRG, that is what I was worried about. I am a mechanic and engine builder and I know what lapping compound can do long term esp if it is not all removed.
