I ran across a S&W 681-2 .357 today, and I had some questions about the revolver. It's a stainless 4" model with fixed sights, and it has a square butt, with serial # BAN45**. When was this gun first offered? Was it the predesessor to the 686? The gun is nice a nd tight, and in very good condition. What is the value of the gun? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Greeting's Jason 280,

The Smith & Wesson 681 is the stainless steel counterpart
to the 581, and was produced from 1981-1992; with approximately 53,180 units being made begining with
serial number AAE 3887. The Standard Catalog Of Smith
& Wesson, 2nd edition by Supica & Nahas does not specify
when serial prefix BAN was used? The -2 noted the change
of hammer nose, bushing and associated part's. NIB 350,
Exc 300, VG 250 is the price range that the book uses.

The 681 is a fixed sighted L frame model .357 magnum;
whereas the 686 is equipped with adjustable sight's, and
based on the L-frame in .357 magnum.
