aside from the short distance slugs can be used... what is the largest/toughest animal that can be taken with slugs or animals that you wouldnt consider a hard cast 20 or 12 gauge slug enough gun for the job?

just wondering..

I took an 8 point whitetail back in 1992 or around that time...dressed out at 125...hit him from about 50 yards while he was running (I was young & dumb but it worked!). I led him a little too much and hit him in the neck, spun him 180 degrees and dropped on the spot.

I was using 3 inch Remington Sluggers in 12 guage...

Killed several black bears with a 20 gage Ithaca Model 37 featherweight. None over 350 pounds though. I used it like a long barreled pistol and sorta just leaned over the hounds and whacked the critter dead. The bigggest bear would not let me get close enough and I had to fire from the shoulder. A shotgun slug lacks the high speed shock that a centerfire rifle produces.

People will get on me for the pic, but the largest was a 1400 pound Shire stallion who had broken a leg when it tried to get out of a box trailer that was moving it away from its home farm to a new place, I believe it was a 2 year old, but it was down and thrashing and the only gun I had in my truck was a 20 double and a couple of old Super x fosters. one in the ear finished that. Not one of my proudest moments, but it was the biggest thing I have shot with a slug.

Father in law used one to put down a 2400 lb bull that something go wrong in its gut, He liked the longer barrel to stay out side the swing of the polled head.

no grief from me here, you have to do what you have to do. and it sounds like you got it done as quickly as possible so you did a good job.

impressive to know the power of these things its still hard to beleive how much you can change from light bird shot to the power of slugs.

I would have to say an angus cow for me. I have an older friend who owns a farm that raises them for meat and when it's time for slaughter he lets me shoot them sometimes with his .30-06. He once let me use my Mossberg 500 loaded with 1 1/4 ounce Federal rifled slugs. It did the job great. :) Good thing too because my shoulder can't handle multiple recoils from them powerhouse loads.

I've been limited to whitetails as far as hunting with slugs; that being said, the heaviest I've taken were 195, 192, and 169 pounds (whole weight). All were pass through, at 50 yards or less. I use the winchester 2 3/4" 1 oz sabot slug.
