Tom. I'm no lawyer, but I think they can hold you until a search warrant is obtained. I don't think they need a warrant, or your permission if they have "probable cause" though. Like I said, I think that is the way it is. You should check this out with your lawyer, or your local Legal Aid. Hope I helped.

In order to get a search warrant, they would have to articulate to the judge what makes them believe that they will find illegal substances in the car. Most "consent searches" are just that. The car meets a certain criteria like out of state plates, or a rental, time of day or night, the route that is being travelled. If they ask and you say no, most police will say alright and let you go on your way.
