Picked up a new AR upper in 6.8 SPC

Found a Stag upper in 6.8 SPC at a good price. After paying $1.30 a round I found some ammo for my new upper.

Looks very similar in size to the AK round 7.62x39. Weather permitting I am planning on trying it out this weekend. Anyone here use the 6.8 SPC for deer or coyote hunting? I have a Armalite AR in 7.62x39 so needed this like a hole in the head, but figured I would try it anyway.

Here are few shots on how 6.8 SPC looks compared to 223 and 7.62x39 Steel Case.

If you reload the 6.8 really shines. If not, the brass is usually pretty easy to sell and can offset your ammo costs (during "normal" times). You will probably find that Rem ammo underpowered. Hornady 110OTM "American Gunner" and S&B 110fmj are probably the best plinkers and S&B is considered the choice brass. As far as factory hunting ammo Fed Gold Dots, Hornady SST or S&B PTS are popular. There is a 68forum dedicated to this great general purpose round.

I have a 6.8 SPC, 14 inch barrel for a G2 Contender pistol. Brass for 6.8 is expensive to buy. I’ll always remember the day I found 6.8 brass lying on the ground at an outdoor range - what a find.

Of all the myriad different cartridge adaptations to the AR 15 platform, I've always thought the 6.8 spc was the all-around best of them. Enjoy.

Can you give me an idea on what 6.8 SPC ammo was going for before the Covid panic? Trying to get an idea on what Normal was back in day.

6.8 SPC is an excellent choice for hunting AR. Prefer it over 7.62x39 based on flatter shooting and extended range. Lot of bullet good choices for a hunting bullet for the 6.8. I like Nosler's 110 gr Accubond bullet when hunting with my 6.8.

I've found 6.8 as cheap as $0.75/rnd locally before, but usually somewhere in the $1/rnd for the Hornady 110gr stuff. I got set up to reload it immediately after getting the upper together.

Found 5 boxes at Cabelas today for $21 per box so I bought them today. Love the Red Cart when it has ammo on it. :)

The best consistent pricing was through SGAmmo for S&B 110fmj at 11.99 per box if you bought 10 boxes (who wouldn't lol). Like I mentioned above, if you don't reload you can usually recoup $6-7 per box by selling the brass. Even that Remington brass will find a home as some folks prefer the LRP.

Another 6.8 fan here, I don't have any 5.56 AR's, only 6.8 spc. I bought a bunch of the Silver State Armory Tactical 110gr. sp's back in the day when they were affordable. I recover all my empty brass but haven't shot it in awhile due to the lack of availability and insane ammo prices.

I agree that it is the best compromise between 5.56 and 7.62x39, had the 6.8 spc been available when I bought the 7.62 AK's I wouldn't have bought the AK's and just went with the 6.8 spc AR's, but I'm still not getting rid of the AK's.

I am a fan of the 6.8, my kids and I have been hunting deer with them for several years now. Since I hand load I’ve no idea what store bought ammo cost. I have been hunting with 100 grain Accubonds over AA2200. It’s a great round for SC white tails.
