...exaclty how are you supposed to use the sling cut-out in an M1 carbine?

You push a loop of sling through the stock, put the oiler in the loop, and find three strong men and at least one small boy to push this mess into the slot.

A large rubber hammer and much profanity is of great benefit.

1. The oiler is correct, but an empty .30-'06 case will do the job just fine, as many WWII vets knew. (I don't think anybody ever actually used the %%#$ oiler.)

2. The army, in its wisdom, spec'd the stock to just allow room for the oiler and the old WWII thin sling. Then they adopted a thicker sling. You can fight it, or do what I did as an armorer - get a flat file and take off a little wood on the front inside of the cut.

I was always curious as to why it was so hard to get the blankedy-blank strap through the slot in my carbines! I've left them there for years, no reason to suffer that pain until I have a reason to take them off.
