Officer wounds sword-wielding teen
Louisville police charge boy with attempted murder

A 17-year-old boy who was shot twice by a Louisville policeman after he allegedly lunged toward the officer with a ''samurai-style'' sword late Monday was in serious condition yesterday after seven hours of surgery.

The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. Monday when police received a report of disorderly people near a wooded area off Interstate 64 near the Grinstead Drive exit, Smith said.

When police arrived they encountered a group of 15 young people having a party around a campfire, Smith said. The officers identified themselves, and the crowd scattered, ''except for a male subject brandishing a samurai-type sword, and another male subject who was passed out in a cave,'' Smith said.

Straus, who was in uniform, identified himself to the teen holding the 3-foot sword and repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, Smith said.

I'd agree, if...

makes sense, presuming the kid with the sword --

1 -- knew how to use the darn thing
2 -- was sober

Given the facts as presented, I rather doubt either was the case.

oh yeah, 3 --
was a decent edged blade, and not a POS stamped steel with injected plastic highlander-picture-dragons and an edge not up to cutting butter. Seen to many of those lately.

The noted samurai Miamoto Mushashi wrote in 1600 "firearms are now the predominant weapos at least until swords are crossed."
