No Public Ranges near Albany, Ny?

I just moved to Albany, NY and by looking around and visiting local gun shops everyone says there are no near public shooting ranges. All the ranges are member only and you need to know a member so that he can sponsor you.

Not being around or know anyone with guns and not being from this area, what do I do? This seems a little ridiculous and seems to inhibit people from getting into the sport of shooting (and in New York we can use all the advocates we can get)? Thanks

Also, try hanging around those gun shops a bit. Sometimes the people who work there are members of the private clubs and are willing to sponsor somebody if they get to know you a little. I've seen it happen before.
