Just received the 2 oldest rifles I own: 110 and 115 years old, respectively:

The Model 94 is the older of the two, has a 26" octagon barrel and is chambered in .38-55 caliber; the Model 92 has a 24" round barrel and is chambered in .44-40. Put together with my 1948 .30-30 Model 94 Carbine, it kind of makes a full set.

These were all my father's guns, before he passed away in 1980.

I can't comment on your decision to quit drinking... I know that is an extremely personal decision, but yes indeed, those are the Winchester close-coupled double set triggers. :)

Very Nice

Dunno if you are familiar with shooting rifles with crescent shaped buttplates, but just in case you're not, please allow me give you a little bit of advice.

DO NOT mount the rifle with the points of the crescent against the meaty part of your shoulder. If you do, that 38-55 is going to hurt like hell when it recoils. I used to have a cut down '94 with a crescent butt plate chambered for 30-30 many years ago, and even with a relatively mild cartridge like 30-30 it hurt like hell every time I fired it.

Crescent shaped butt plates like that are meant to be hiked a little bit further out along the shoulder, so the points of the crescent encircle the shoulder joint. The points should not be touching you, they serve to keep the gun from slipping up or down. Shooting like this may involve changing your stance a bit, facing at about 90 degrees to the target, rather than straight on, with the rifle pointing across your chest at the target. You may also find you need to raise your elbow a bit more than you are used to to bring the gun up to your face. Don't hunch over and bring your face down to the gun.

Do this with the '92 too. Even with a light recoiling cartridge like 44-40 it will help.

I sure wish somebody had told me this all those years ago when I had that light weight '94. Would have saved a lot of pain.

These 92s are chambered for 44-40. The one at the top has the classic Winchester rifle style butt plate. The carbine has a less severe curve.

This '73 is chambered for 38-40 with the classic Winchester rifle style butt plate.

Very nice guns! Now get yourself some Starline 38-55 brass and get to loading. I use commercial cast boolits in my Marlin 1893 over appropriate (black powder pressure) loads of smokeless.
