I have an enfield model 1917 to refinish, and the stock has been cut.
This gun was my grandfather that he bought after world war 1. He read in the NRA magazine that you could convert the gun to a sporting rifle my cutting the stock and shorting the barrel.

Last night I went to a gun show and I found a original stock. I was over joyed. They had all of the pieces I needed. There was the full length stock and the metal rings.

I decided not to buy it then and took the guys card. I went home and checked out the enfield because of a question I had. On the rear piece that covers the top of the barrel there is a groove cut into the wood. I wasn't sure if my rifle had a place for the groove to go into. I checked and it looks like my grandpa grinded it down.

I want to know if there is a way to attach the stock if the groove is grinded down.

I want the gun to look as original as possible. Lucky for me he didn't shorten the barrel.

Is there anything I can do or should I just refinish the stock that I have?
