I just checked out a new 870 and it's no where near as nice as my old Wingmaster. So, are the new 870s as good as the old ones, or has quality gone down hill?

You probably were looking at an express model, which is Remington's "economy" version of the wingmaster. The wingmaster is still available but costs a little more than the express.

If it's the "Express" model, it's the same gun as your Wingmaster minus the shiney stock and detail. Otherwise it should function and shoot the same as your Wingmaster.

I've seen them both side by side and there appears to be NO difference other than appearance. Shooters of each have verified this, but I'm sure someone else will know for sure if there's a design differnce (I do not know for sure).
