I have an 1895G 45-70 (18" bbl) that I shoot 405 grain home loads out of. I had a bunch of them that after you set one off you were not to enthused about touching off another. I learned quickly that I like them load down a bit.
I also shoot 405 grain out of a Pedersoli Rolling Block with a 30" bbl but I load them down at starting loads and they are pretty easy on the shooter. The 45-70 is my favorite round to shoot but I don't hunt with them.
I gave up hunting about 15 years ago but I would not hesitate to encourage others to take up the sport. Maybe one day I'll try for a hog you never know.
