Need a good 870 mag extention

I went out and bought an 18.5" barrrel for my 870 so I could keep it by the door and I'd like to add an extention to the mag. I'd like it to be durable enough that I can take it on and off pretty regularly as this is also my trap gun.

Tacstar, Wilson, Reminton, NC, Choate, Tanks rifle shop, GunConnection are all well made so pick which one fits your needs and price range. Everyone has an opinion as to which they like best but all above work and are reliable overall.

I would stay away from the ATI plastic tube extension. Choate and Tacstar come with cheap mag tube springs. You will need to purchase a Wolff universal 12Ga spring too if you go with them.

Unless something has changed dramatically I'd also stay away from Tacstar.

They have a history of separation of the extension nut from the extension body.

Please post the history of TS tube separation and I will be a believer.


I have only read about one that separated from the base. Nordic aluminum tubes had a problem with searing at the base when they first came out. I seen pictures of one posted on here.

I had a Choate tube extension that separated from the base. It was an easy fix but I have only seen one. It can happen with any tube extension and does.

Had it happen to me personally. I've read of the one here and there was another individual locally that I've shot with that had the same experience.

I've never heard of a choate doing it, my understanding was that they were one piece though I've only owned one of those in the past.

I personally prefer Remington in that they are two piece, but threaded.

That's three, hardly a history. All tube extensions are either threaded in the base like Nordic, Remington Factory and Tanks or silver soldered like Choate, Wilson, TacStar and Gun Connection.

It's very easy to fix if it wasn't silver soldered well. Clean it up, degrease and use JB Weld. It takes about 20 mins and let it set up for 24 hours. It will hold for ever.

The one that came apart on me looked as if someone simply forgot to silver solder it. No residue or evidence at all. Looked like someone just press fit the thing together and hoped for the best.

As for three being enough to constitute a history I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree :D.

I had a TacStar seperate on me.

Right now I use Nordic, Remington, and Wilson extensions. None have given me any problems. I will probably try the Vang Comp for my next gun.

It's not "Hanks Rifle Shop" it's TANK'S Rifle Shop.

I installed a good number of extensions over the years and saw several defective Tac-Star extensions.

Problems included:
Tubes crooked on the collar.
A collar that was egg-shaped and wouldn't screw on.
Tubes that were separating from the collar.

To answer the OP's question, most extensions are quite serviceable.
My opinion, the best for the price/quality is the Choate.
It was the first after the Remington factory extension and has a LONG history of good quality and good service.

It comes in blued or parkerized, in many lengths, and as a complete kit with extension, spring, heavy-duty follower, and the barrel clamp with sling swivels.

I hung four Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech +2 extensions on Dept-owned 870s and I was really impressed with the sturdiness of the mount and the quality of springs/followers.

Once finished, I ran a 100 pack of bird loads through them as fast as I could rack 'em through, The positive manner in which they fed shells was comforting at that speed and I came away convinced the setup was worthy for a duty shotgun.

i have used both Choate & Scattergun Tech/Wilson Combat extensions. Also Nordic components bbl/mag tube clamps.

Choate is quality & serviceable. The kit I bought had everything: mag ext, clamp, spring, follower. Not too pretty, though.

ST/WC mag ext is both quality & serviceable, but also a wonderfully beautiful bit of work. My only gripe is that the kit lacked a mag/bbl clamp.

Nordic is like ST/WC: just beautiful & stout.
