NAIS - have you heard of this??

I found out about this not too long ago. What I understand is, there was an uproar about it so it became voluntary, but they are not backing off permanently. There is going to be mandatory registration of premises and microchipping of animals eventually. From what I've read, it's 2009. Is this true?

At any rate, I stumbled on some web articles that reminded me how bad this NAIS thing is. And I can see they're trying to make NAIS socially acceptable by "reaching out" to schools. Another way to waste tax dollars in a manner unapproved by the taxpayers.

So now not only do you have to worry about gun grabbers, now it's livestock grabbers too. :barf: And no, IMO, their registration process is not acceptable in any of its forms.

If they were worried about bird flu for real, they'd be figuring out a way to control wild bird populations. There are probably 1,000 blackbirds outside today, and they want to force me to enter 6 chickens in their database?

This sounds like the same kind of reasoning used by gun control people. In other words, lies and distortions to achieve a political agenda that would wilt under scrutiny.

Sorry I forgot to put the link to a site where you can read a lot about the ugliness of NAIS:

http://nonais.org/

I would hope people are able to see through the selling points being advanced by the proponents of NAIS, including the people who would administer it (hint hint the USDA).

I dont really think they care about your 6 chickens, or my 24 chickens for that matter. also dont think they care about my three horses.
i dont breed my animals nor do i transport them anywhere, and i dont host anyone elses animals. even my longhorn cattle are for show only and will never end up on anyones dinner plate.
I doubt your 6 chickens are being raised for sale on the commercial market as food!:)
this doesnt apply to us.
I dont have any problem with the big, mega-dollar commercial outfits being held accountable. and i doubt the majority of them have no problem with it either.
If its possible to contain an outbreak and have a system in place that reassures the market that it is in fact contained, we might avoid future boycotts of our exports.
I think that would be beneficial to the industry as a whole.
I guess i dont mind regulation of the food i feed my family.

I think all the hoopla about NAIS is that they do care about my 6 chickens and your 3 horses. According to what I've read there is no exemption for people who raise animals for their own use, and that's the big problem. Way I understand it you have to register each animal in your flock or herd, whereas the big companies get to do 1 bulk registration for an entire herd. If an animal leaves your property even once you have to report it.

Because, you know, the 1000's of wild blackbirds that might carry bird flu are much less of a concern than one unregistered chicken.

Does this way of thinking sound familiar to anyone on TFL?

Let me see if I understand this. The people who can't keep track of illegal aliens and illegal drugs think they are now qualified to keep track of the chicken that crosses the road without filing the offical crossing-the-road forms. Yup, that's going to work real well.

Yup, that about sums it up. Why do people keep looking to the same government who screws up nearly everything to solve our problems:confused:

They already have that figured out. Veterinarians will have the choice between ratting you out, and losing their license to practice. Guess which they'll choose.

Way I figure it is, it will become so expensive and bothersome that people like you and me will get rid of our livestock and just buy at the store. Which I think is kind of the idea. The big companies see you and me as untapped revenue streams.

In my opinion it is these irresponsible and over reaching schemes like NAIS, mostly favored by Republicans and big corporations, that gives the socialists more fuel for their fire. People seriously have to wonder why Obama is gaining so much support?

The Republicans did it to themselves. They threw away tradional American values in favor of corporate sponsorship. Congressmen should just wear company logos like the NASCAR drivers have on their cars.

No need to wonder how it is our elections came down to a choice between a dirt sandwich, and a dirt sandwich with mayo.
