I've gone just over 5000 rds. with my DPMS Oracle ar15 ($500 rifle, pencil barrell) and I wanted to see how its accuracy has held up.
When I got it a few years ago, after about 100rd. break in, I used 30 rds over six 5 shot groups and averaged the groups. I came up with an average of 1.56" (100 yds.).
Since then, I've mostly shot the rifle offhand, mostly with Tula steel case ammo.
So, this morning I went to the range with 13 rds. to check the size of a 5 rd. group, and to see how it held at 7x (5 rds.), 4.5x (4 rds.), and 2x (4 rds.).
Conditions: near perfect.
Scope: Leupold Rifleman 2-7 variable ($190 scope). A few years ago, I was using a cheap NcStar 2-6 scope that I later ditched.
Ammo: Geco 55g (used both a couple years ago, and today)
Zero: 300 yds.
I was surprised at the results.
Groups:
7x 5 shot = 1.6", esentially unchanged from when the rifle was near new.
4.5x 4 shot = 1.75"
2x 4 shot = 1.1"
I'd say the rifle is as accurate now, as it was near new.
Also, the only stoppage I've had with the rifle was a squib, a month ago, that was entirely the fault of the (Fiocchi) ammo.
My only let down is that the Leupold is lowering its center with decrease in power - not a huge problem, but....
So: damned good inexpensive DPMS rifle; very good Geco ammo (my groups would be 2 or 3 times that size with the other stuff I shoot); a good, but maybe not excellent scope.
