Mosin Nagant Question

My friend recently bought a M44 with a sealed can of brass surplus ammo. Don't have the headstamp because I'm at work but we had an issue that I've never experienced.

Two out of 10 rounds had small case splits near the rim. About 3/16" from the rim there were three cracks about 1/8" in length. I don't believe it's the headspace because it's too far up the round and I've never heard of a chamber being deformed. It looks in perfect condition. As of now I'm chalking it up to ammo. Any ideas?

Do the cracks run fore-aft or run circumferentially around the case?

Fore-aft cracks can be caused by stresses induced during the case drawing operation during manufacture and age hardening of brass.

Circumferential cracks are indicative of a headspace problem.
