Just an FYI - The show closing times are when most table holders will start closing-up shop. The doors will remain open and nobody will get thrown out as long as show activity lasts...or when John Scott finally packs up. Please post, PM, or e-mail any questions.

Last time I went to one (it was up around Lancaster that time), I:

A) almost got killed on the frigging Fruitville Pike by some moron who didn't know what a brake was for

B) almost went broke buying cartridges

OK, it's the same show (we just have to rotate hotels on occasion), so I can guarantee you will spend all you bring. I have no control over idiots in cars, but if you get a room for Thursday and Friday nights you will only have to navigate the elevator. It is probably much safer. ;)
Hope to see you there. Bring ammo and stuff to sell/trade!

Cartridge Show in Morgantown

Hello to everyone. I was curious about the Cartridge Show in August.
I am looking for a box of "original" Smith Carbine cartridges (brass foil/paper).

Think I can find that at the show? I would settle for one cartridge if they are being pieced out.

You might get lucky and find a single or two, but I don't recall ever seeing a full box or packet. If you're close and want to have fun buying, selling, or fondling cartridges, make sure to be there.

I've seen and handled full packets before, but only in the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg when I worked there.

The big question is, just how much would you be willing to spend if you were to find a packet?

I suspect that, given that individual rounds can go for upwards $100 or more depending on the composition, you'd be talking well into the thousands for an unopened packet.

Thank you for the responses. You are right. I probably would be able to afford a couple of cartridges. I know that they came in boxes of 10 (usually), and I was looking to find an original box for $800 or so.

But I would be happy to walk away with one. I am very close to Morgantown, so it will be easy for me to stop by.

I do. It's the shining star of my collection. Serial # 7
I have not shot it before and not sure if I would. It's in really good condition and I do not want to jeopardize it.

But I do want a round or two for it's display case. I have a period leather Smith cartridge box, but no original ammo.

Hell, that's rare enough as is!

I fired an original Smith years ago. The owner made his own cartridges out of cardboard tubing with a base plug he glued in place.

He said he could get two, maybe three shots out of each one before it burned up.

He said he was going to try lining the inside with heavy aluminum foil to see if he could get more shots from each one as they were a pain in the butt to make.

is this just mostly like rarer hard to find and collectible ammo for the most part? Since its fairly close i was thinking of checking it out, but would like to know alittle more about it

You will find anything ammo-related. There will be plenty of .25 cent rounds to single for more than $1000. We usually get a nice mix of stuff from new experimentals, all the way back to 18th-19th century paper cartridges.
Make sure to hit the show on Friday, that's traditionally the big day.

When I was a kid my neighbor had a very nice gun collection. I recall he gave me a few very small shot gun shells. It has the size of a .22lr, had a brass base and paper body. Antone know what that may have been for?

Sounds like they might have been 6mm or 7mm shotshells. They were European and are long obsolete. Still fairly common to see them, though.

As far as I know, no US manufacturer ever made .22 shotshells like that. It was always a copper or brass case with a shot capsule.

Show tables are almost sold out!
I hope some of you "Ammo Curious" members will stop by. Great way to diversify your collecting at minimal cost.
